For most healthy dogs, checking the ears once a week is a good habit. Only clean them when you notice wax, dirt, or debris—not every time you groom. Over-cleaning can be just as unhelpful as not cleaning them at all.

Many small dogs benefit from a quick wipe once a day to remove tear stains, dust, or dried discharge before it builds up. Regular cleaning is usually easier than trying to remove stubborn staining later.

Light-colored coats make tear staining easier to see, especially around the eyes. Breed, eye shape, and natural tear production all play a role. Gentle daily cleaning helps keep the area looking fresh.

Dogs with floppy ears, long ear hair, or ears that stay damp after swimming often need more regular checks. Even so, every dog benefits from a quick weekly look to catch changes early.

A little wax or occasional tear staining is normal. Strong odor, swelling, redness, excessive scratching, or thick discharge aren't part of everyday grooming. Those changes deserve professional advice rather than another cleaning product.
