Brushes & Combs

For most small dogs, brushing 2–3 times a week is a good routine. Long, curly, or silky coats often benefit from daily brushing, while short coats usually need less. A few minutes regularly is easier than tackling knots once they've already formed.

Usually, yes. Brushes made for larger breeds can be awkward on a 3kg Chihuahua or Maltese. Smaller brush heads make it easier to groom delicate areas like the face, legs, and underarms while giving you better control.

Ideally, yes. A brush removes loose hair and keeps the coat looking its best, while a comb helps find small tangles behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar before they become mats.

Keep sessions short. Two or three minutes every day is usually more successful than twenty minutes once a week. Reward calm behaviour and stop while your dog is still comfortable. Consistency builds the routine.

The coat matters more than the breed. Slicker brushes work well for many curly and longer coats, pin brushes suit silky coats, and combs help finish the job by checking for hidden knots. The right tool makes grooming easier for both of you.
